SPANISH BY LEVELS

ChiCeLaCu! models its program after the European Framework for Teaching Foreign Languages and offers the following levels: Beginner A1, Beginner A2, Intermediate B1, Intermediate B2, Advanced C1 and Business Spanish. ChiCeLaCu! will offer 6 courses starting with Beginner A1 and ending with Advanced C1. Each course will be approximately 2 months long and students will have the option to meet either 2 or 3 times per week. The first 2 days of classroom instruction will focus on grammar, writing, listening comprehension and speaking. The third day will focus on building conversational skills.

Beginner A1 & A2:Students must take both Beginner A1 and Beginner A2 to achieve the desired course objectives. After taking both Beginner A1 and Beginner A2, student will be able to:

  • Describe daily routines and leisure activities
  • Accurately ask for a product or service
  • Describe themselves, likes and dislikes, their families and environment
  • Discuss location, permanent and changing emotions, and personal characteristics
Topics:Basic reading comprehension of short texts; basic conversation and grammar (present simple, regular
and irregular verbs, pronouns, and prepositions), verb “to be” (“ser” y “estar”)

Intermediate B1 & B2: Students must take both Intermediate B1 and Intermediate B2 to achieve the desired course objectives. After taking both Intermediate B1 and Intermediate B2, student will be able to:
  • Narrate personal anecdotes and describe people and places in the past
  • Apply general vocabulary to describe historical facts, favorite places or environment
  • Express expectations, dreams, and plans in the long and short term
  • Express cause and effect and provide solutions
  • Identify the main idea in general academic texts
Topics: Commands, general academic vocabulary, intermediate reading comprehension, conversation and
grammar (preterit imperfect and indefinite, future simple and indefinite, basic connectors).

Advanced C1: Students will apply advanced vocabulary, grammar, and figures of speech to discuss various topics including controversial issues. Students opting for the 3-day option will also work on developing conversational skills specific to a business environment and cultural differences among the different Latin American countries.

Topics: Advanced grammar including indirect speech and the subjunctive in all the grammatical tenses; conditionals and advanced connectors to contrast and support opinions.

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE


This course is designed for individuals new to the language and aims to build a strong language foundation in both written and oral expression. Students will be able to confidently express basic ideas, needs and wants in everyday situations. The course will be approximately 2 months long and students will have the option to meet either 2 or 3 times per week. Two days of classroom instruction will focus on grammar, writing, listening comprehension and speaking while a third will focus on building conversational skills with the support of a tutor.

Topics: Yes/No questions; WH questions (who, where, when, why, how and what): quantifiers (any, some, a, an); vocabulary related to daily routines, free time activities and other common
conversational interactions in contexts such as airports, cinema, office, schools, public transportation, etc.; basic grammar (present simple, adverbs of time and frequency, pronouns, and prepositions).

ADVANCED SPANISH FOR NATIVE SPEAKERS

This course is designed to promote the proper use of Spanish among native speakers. The course will enhance each students’ vocabulary, address common spelling and grammatical mistakes and elevate their writing style and skills to a professional level. Specifically, the course offers a writing workshop, covers advanced grammatical structures, advanced reading comprehension and typology and requires the production of various types of texts, including reports, essays, and reviews. Topic: Indicative and subjunctive modes; linkers and connectors; spelling rules for C, S, Z, K and Q; roots and suffixes, cognates, various literary texts; essay and report writing, APA style of referencing.
